Holiday Wishes

Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends!  (especially teacupdiaries !)

Day 16 - and bad news.

Yesterday's word count: 982 words
Today's word count: 3,140 words
Total word count: 20,181 words

So I'm only about four and a half days behind, now.  This morning, I did the math and adjusted my daily word-count goals to be caught up again in seven days.  My new goal for each day of this week is 3,043 words.  Intimidating, sure, but not too bad.

Went to another write-in, yesterday.  I had a lot of fun.  I took a couple batches of my grandmother's cookies - chocolate chip and chocolate-chocolate-chip.  Everybody loved them.  =)  I'm making a bunch of new friends, here, and there's talk of writing together more when the month is over.

For those who hadn't heard yet, I had a seizure at the write-in.  A bad one.  Thankfully, I had already told a couple of people that I have them, last week, so Angel told everybody to stay calm as she took my glasses off me.  I woke up feeling the same feelings of intense shame, but everybody was truly cool for me, telling me there was nothing to be embarrassed about.  They talked calmly about other stuff to keep attention off me for a bit, and in a few minutes, i was telling them funny stories and we were all laughing.  I was pretty much done writing for the night, and i felt like shit, but I still had fun after that.

I did, unfortunately, hit the back of my head on the edge of a really solid wood shelf as I fell.  It's still a little tender to the touch, but just a little.  I was a touch freaked out because there were people there who had never seen one of my seizures before (everyone, really), but like I said, they were cool.

I think I did set a new record for time before seizures.  I don't really have the time to go looking to verify it, but I think I did better the old record by a couple of weeks.  That is something to be happy about.  I got ten hours of sleep, last night, and went for a long workout at the gym today, and I feel a lot better, especially after all the writing I got done.

I'm going for more sleep.  I'll talk to you all soon.  <3

Day 13

Yesterday's word count: 1,168 words
Today's word count: 1,935
Total word count: 16,059 words

Yes, I'm behind, by about three and a half days.  I'll be spending most of the weekend working to catch up.

I've been stuck on scenes with the villain, trying to think of villainous things for her to do to my hero.  So far, she just comes off as pretty stupid.

No matter.  I am building to something horrible for her to do, it's just taking a little time.  In the meantime, she's on the path to saving herself.  I actually did manage to work my old RPG character Teddy into the book, as a sort of trader in secrets.  <3

My characters are doing unexpected things, and I love it.  My original outline is rapidly becoming useless, but I'm improvising well.

In the meantime, I've earned a little bit of a reward, so I'm going to watch an episode of Heroes.  Ta.

Day Off!

I have the day off, today, hooray.

I'm taking the day to de-stress from NaNoWriMo a little bit (partly by doing a little writing) and catch up a little on the cleaning.

I'll be at home for most of the day, although I am debating a trip to the gym.

Maybe I'll write something fun to break the rhythm of working on Toy for a bit.

Either way, I'm home.  I'm bored.  Huzzah.

Day 8 - and a write-n

Today's Word Count: 3,674 words
Total Word Count: 12,956 words

I was terribly stuck for a few days, there, and wound up having to erase the last three or four paragraphs and move in a different direction to get going again.  Once I got going again, though, I was all right.

I went to another write-in, tonight.  Huzzah.  I've actually found a crowd of people that I'm comfortable with.  When I first meet people - especially when I meet a lot of people at once - it takes me time to warm up to them, and I wind up twitching a lot.  I didn't twitch nearly as much tonight as I did the previous two Saturdays, and I felt a lot more relaxed.  I did, however, twitch very hard a couple of times, and knocked myself unconscious.  No one really seemed to pay it much mind, however, except for Kara and Nichole, who were sitting right next to me.

All in all, though, I'm having a lot of fun with this bunch.  I'm making a lot of new friends that I hope will still be my friends once November is over.

The book is coming along well.  It's a first draft, so I'm trying hard not to judge it as it goes along, and I'm being really productive.  The story is deviating from the plan in unexpected ways, but that's really part of the fun.  I'm improvising slowly but surely.

In other writing news, reviews are coming in for Sweet Georgia Rule, and everyone over at that community loved it.  =D  With all the work I put into that story, it's heartwarming to see a community embracing a story that is unusual for their genre (in that it's really romantic, in the end).  It's gratifying to know that all my hard work paid off.

I'm trying to be online more, I really am, but if I miss a few posts, I hope you'll forgive me.

Election Results

I'm bouncing around happy that Obama has won the election for President, and that the Dems have taken a lot more seats in both the House and the Senate.

Delirious.  Really.

I'm fuming about California Proposition 8.  It is NOT decided, yet, by the way.  There are still another three to four million absentee ballots left to be tallied.  What I'm pissed off about is that it's so fucking close.  It's ridiculous!  People are actually voting to take away the rights of other human beings!  That is NOT the America I was raised to believe in!  And yet, only 400,000 votes separate the "YES" and "NO" results as of 9am, this morning, with the "YES" camp leading.

It's hard to feel my pride for America with this shit also going on.

*crosses fingers and waits impatiently*

Day 4

Today's Word Count:  2,361 words
Total Word Count: 9,282 words

Hooray.  <3

Day 3

Today's Word Count: 3,414 words
Total Word Count: 6,921 words

I'm just over a day ahead of schedule.  =D

I took my Neo to work with me, today, intending to use it when I took my breaks, but wound up using it all day.  I had a little time before my shift so I typed.  Then I found out I was starting the day with a training class, so I sat waiting for class to start and typed.  The class was populated with several computer-illiterate people, who had to be helped several times by the teacher, so I had to sit and wait, typing.  I took breaks, and typed.  There were moments between calls where I typed.  There were little moments where the person on the other end of the phone had another call and asked to place me on hold... so I typed.  By the time I left work, I had racked up nearly 2,000 words already.  Huzzah!  I love this thing!

I am so glad I took the time to solidify the outline on paper weeks ago.  It has helped so much!  I've diverged from that outline, a bit, but just knowing where in general I'm going next and knowing what little bits of information I need to drop by certain points allows me to keep typing when I otherwise would have stalled.  It's been a major help.

And I can not tell you just how much fun I'm having with this!  I really feel like I'm accomplishing something.  The draft I'm whipping out is just the bare-bones structure, with hardly any setting or character description, but it's still good stuff.

Day 1 - Reprise

5:30 - So, I'm here at Crane Coffee on Cass street.  There are seven of us here, so far, and we're all talking about writing software, dressing up young boys in dresses, and the near complete lack of sausage in the room.  (as opposed to writing, which is what we're supposed to be doing, right?)

Everyone else here is using a laptop.  As soon as I walked in the room, people asked if I bought a power strip with me, which I actually had been planning on doing, but forgot.

I love this coffee shop.  I walked up to the counter to buy coffee and discovered that they have huge fruit smoothies, too, so I got something strawberry based.  They've also set aside their "side room" for us.  It is a separate room, albeit small.

8:15 - I've spent the last hour and a half across the street at an Old Chicago sampling the Fish 'n' Chips and talking to four of the other writers.  The food was terrific, and the people are pretty cool.  One of them (Erica) politely asked why I was twitching, which I like.  I like people who have the simple balls to ask instead of just sitting there, feeling uncomfortable.

I've gotten back to Crane Coffee, and there are now more than a dozen of us, with my friends still on the way back.  I've discovered that the ones who were not here when I left missed me.  I'm now sitting at a table with the local events manager and a pair of teen girls (not hers), discussing geekiness and laptops and such.

The geeks, by the way, have officially declared a word war with the knitters.

9:30 - I don't think I'm going to make my word count goal.  I've discovered that my Neo does indeed have a word count function, and I'm only up to about 2,600 words.  On the plus side, I'm behind in word count because I've been socializing.  It turns out the teen sitting next to me is actually 20 and is pretty cool.  I've met so many people, I can't keep their names straight in my head.  I'm having a lot of fun, even if I am going to have to do some catch up work, tomorrow.

12:45 - Got home about an hour ago and have been enjoying the alone time for a bit before posting.  Loved being social (and especially loved that it was easy for me, for once) but need to be alone.  Final word count for the day - 3511 words.  (according to my Neo.)  Not 5,000, but it's more than two days' worth, so that's good.  I'll do the 5,000 tomorrow.

Day 1

Okay, so this year's NaNoWriMo is officially underway, and I am totally psyched!  I did 1,330 words before flopping into bed, last night, and I woke up this morning raring to go!  Of course, I can't update my official word count right now, because the NaNoWriMo site is completely flooded, but that's cool.  I can wait it out.  In the meantime, I'm going to clean house a little bit, grab some breakfast, and make a few plans for tonight's writing.

There's a write in at a local coffee shop, tonight.  From the sounds of the confirmations on the list, there sould be at least a dozen other writers there.  One of the guys I met last week is stopping by to pick me up at five and I'll probably be there 'til close at eleven!  This should be a lot of fun!  People are going to be writing on laptops, Neos, pads of paper... one woman is even bringing a manual typewriter!  I haven't seen one of those since I was a little kid.  =)

So, last week, when we were all talking about doing write ins like this, I happened to mention aloud that I'd be doing my writing on paper and pencil, but that would be all right, and one of them suggested that I pick up a Neo.  What's a Neo?  Turns out, it's a tiny little keyboard with a simple LCD screen and an embedded word processor.  It costs just a little over $200 and runs on three "AA" batteries.  It's perfect for coffee shop writing.  You don't need to ask to use the outlets, there's no distractions form video games or the Internet, it's not bloody likely to get stolen, and it's got an instant on/off feature with an autosave, so if you want to get up and go to the bathroom  you can just pick it up and go and not have to spend five minutes saving and shutting down and then five more setting back up again.  I'm actually writing this entry in my recliner in my reading corner instead of sitting at my desk!  Hell, after my shower, I'm thinking about banging out some word count out on my balcony!

My solid goal for today is 5,000 words, but I'm really hoping to make it to 10,000.  We'll see.

In any case, I've got to get going.  Munchies!
